On May 31st and June 1st 252 guests attended a reception at the official residence of the Consul General, including the Honourable Daniel Hays, former Speaker of the Senate of Canada, mayors of cities with twinning relations with Japan, MLAs, Provincial government officials, professors and other members of academia, business figures, and members of Japanese-Canadian associations.
At the beginning of the reception Consul General Kobayashi gave opening remarks, and spoke of his trip to Banff and Manitoba which he made soon after his arrival to Canada. Referencing the Japan-Alberta relationship, he also expressed his desire to further strengthen the relationship between Japan and the provinces in his jurisdiction. Also present and offering remarks were Chief of Protocol Shannon Haggarty, representing the Government of Alberta, and the Deputy Mayor of Lethbridge, Mr. Jeff Coffman.
At the reception both Japanese tea and sake tastings were made available, as well as a demonstration of tempura frying by the official residence chef, and guests spoke with the newly-arrived Consul General and Mrs. Kobayashi while enjoying Japanese cuisine.
