On both November 22nd and 23rd, receptions were held at the Consul General's official residence in celebration of the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. Among the approximately 300 guests were Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Mayors and other municipal officials, and leaders from various sectors, including the Government of Alberta, the Consular Corps, business, culture, and the Japanese community.
In his welcoming address to the guests, Consul General Kobayashi explained that, from the end of April next year into the beginning of May, His Majesty the Emperor will abdicate and His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince will accede to the imperial throne. In reviewing several highlights from 2018, which marks the 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations, the Consul General observed that bilateral relations between the two countries have been further strengthened in various fields.
Remarks were also delivered by Mr. Bob Benzen (Member of Parliament for Calgary-Heritage), Ms. Anam Kazim (Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-Glenmore), His Worship, Mayor Andrew Prokop of Taber, His Worship, Reeve Lorne Hickey of Lethbridge County, and His Worship, Deputy Mayor Gord Lawlor of Stettler.
During the reception, guests enjoyed tempura specially prepared before them by the Consul General's chef while also tasting a selection of Japanese sake and tea. In addition to the variety of Japanese cuisine, guests had the opportunity to try wagyu beef and the new crop of Japanese rice.
