Katsura Sunshine is Back!
KATSURA SUNSHINE IS BACK! The Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary is pleased to announce it is bringing back famed Rakugo artist, Katsura Sunshine, to Banff & Calgary for his Rakugo performances in ENGLISH, FREE to the public. Katsura Sunshine (given the stage name by his master Katsura Bunshi VI) is the only performer of Western descent among the approximately 700 professional Rakugo storytellers practicing today…and he just so happens to be Canadian!
Rakugo is a 400-year-old tradition of comic storytelling in Japan. A minimalistic performance art, Rakugo features a lone storyteller dressed in kimono, kneeling on a cushion, who, using only a fan and a hand towel for props, entertains the audience with a comic monologue followed by a traditional story.
