2016 Spring Conferment of Decoration, Professor X. Jie Yang of the University of Calgary

The Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2016 Spring Imperial Decorations. Professor X. Jie Yang of the University of Calgary is one of 91 foreign recipients around the world and he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, in recognition of his contributions to Japanese language education and promotion of Japan-related studies, enabling further mutual understanding between Japan and Canada.
In 2004, he initiated a one-month Japanese language and culture training program named ‘Japanese Culture Studies in an Immersion Setting’. Every year, 20-40 participant students led by professor Yang visit Japan and grow their interest and affection for Japan and its culture.
Due to these achievements, the University of Calgary granted him ‘Award for Leadership in Internationalization’ in 2014.
Since he received his Ph.D. in Literature from Kyoto University in 1989 as the first international student, his continuous research on Japanese cultures studies, which amount to 3 books and more than 30 articles and papers, have been considered to be significant in the area of medieval Japanese literature.

In 2005, professor Yang established the Japanese Program in the Department of Linguistics, Languages and Cultures (Department of Germanic, Slavic and East Asian Studies at the time), which offers junior and senior level language courses in Japanese language and culture. Thanks to his ceaseless efforts, the Japanese Program boasts the largest number of students in the Department of Linguistics, Languages and Cultures for more than 15 years.In 2004, he initiated a one-month Japanese language and culture training program named ‘Japanese Culture Studies in an Immersion Setting’.
