Performances by 3 Ainu Performers in Calgary and Lethbridge
In order to promote understanding of the culture of the Ainu – indigenous people of Hokkaido which has shared a 37 year-long sister-province relationship with Alberta – to the people of Alberta, 3 Ainu music performers from Hokkaido were invited to Canada from August 9th to 13th, during which time they held performances using traditional Ainu instruments.
On August 11th they carried out a collaborative session in Lethbridge at Galt Museum & Archives’ Fort Whoop-Up along with members of the Blackfoot nation in a dance & musical performance.
Then the Ainu performed again in Calgary on August 12th at the 7th annual Calgary Japanese Festival Omatsuri, using Ainu folk instruments including the “Mukkuri” and the “Tonkori”, in addition to exhibiting Ainu folk crafts.
