2018/1/29

On January 18th at the official residence of the Consul General, the ceremony for the Autumn Conferment of Decorations for 2017 was held to bestow the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays upon Dr. Tetsuo Yoshida, President of the Calgary Japanese Language School.

In Consul General Tanabe’s opening remarks he praised Dr. Yoshida for his accomplishments, including his continuing to be engaged in the activities of the Calgary Japanese Language School for over 40 years, as well as the school’s current enrollment of over 300 students, and for being a pioneer in Calgary by—going beyond teaching simply the language—deepening understanding of the culture of Japan.

In response, Dr. Yoshida expressed great honour at receiving the decoration, and once again conveyed his gratitude to his family, friends, and all those affiliated with the Calgary Japanese Language School for their support in the School’s undertakings. To follow, Mr. Rocky Oishi, member of the Calgary Japanese Language School board of directors and long-time friend of Dr. Yoshida, gave a speech on the life and character of the recipient. To cap it off, Principal of the Calgary Japanese Language School, Mr. Komori, presented a toast in Dr. Yoshida’s honour.

Many individuals familiar with Dr. Yoshida’s character and accomplishments were eager to attend, making for a pleasant conferment ceremony, including those in the field of Japanese language education in the area, and members of the Japanese-Canadian Community, as well as a representative of the Southern Alberta Heritage Language Association.
