2024 Emperor's Birthday Reception

On February 23rd, the Consul-General of Japan in Calgary Takahiko Watabe and Mrs. Watabe hosted a reception to celebrate the 64th Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.

Approximately 350 guests attended the reception from a variety of fields, including Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, Deputy Premier Nathan Neudorf, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, Nathan Cooper and other government officials, MLAs, business, cultural, and educational representatives. Following both national anthems, speeches were made from Consul-General Watabe, Her Worship Jyodi Gondek and Deputy Premier Neudorf.. A toast was then offered by the Honourable Nathan Cooper.

The event consisted of Japanese cuisine, including three types of seafood dishes prepared by the official chef, handmade sushi from Mr. Umino, the owner of Sushi Bar Zipang, and a variety of sake, as well as a taiko drum performance by Yama no Oto. In addition, the Hokkaido Prefectural Government also participated and worked with volunteers from the Hokkaido Club and the Southern Alberta JET Alumni Association to promote Hokkaido at a PR booth.
