Consul-General Watabe attends the Alberta/Japan Twinned Municipalities Association Annual General Meeting 2023

2023/5/24
On May 12 and 13, Consul-General Watabe participated in the 2023 Annual General Meeting of the Alberta/Japan Twinned Municipalities Association held in Jasper, Alberta.

The A/JTMA is comprised of 12 municipalities within Alberta with Japanese sister cities. At this year’s AGM, representatives from Jasper, Rocky Mountain House, Barrhead, Wetaskiwin, Hinton, Stony Plain, Hanna, and Lacombe gathered and reported on their activities.

During his speech, the Consul-General spoke about lifted travel restrictions, the hope that exchange activities will be revitalized with the new direct flights between Calgary and Narita, the importance of cultural exchanges between local governments, and advice to local governments for using the JET Programme effectively. He also read a letter from the Governor of Hokkaido, and presented it to the president of the A/JTMA.

The conference featured presentations connecting Alberta and Japan, such as a presentation from Jasper Theater productions, and the story of mountaineer Yuko Maki, who led a team of Japanese mountaineers to be the first group in the world to climb Mt. Alberta.

Next year’s conference will be held in Rocky Mountain House, AB.
