There is an annual volunteer cleanup activity in Banff, started by Japanese volunteers. Since around 1995, Japanese residents in Banff have led an annual cleanup after the “Golden Week” holiday in May, as a way to contribute to the local community. The initiative began with the spirit of, “Let’s clean up after the many Japanese visitors ― as Japanese ourselves.” Although the activity was interrupted due to the pandemic, it has been passed down to the next generation. Starting in 2022, the town of Banff also began organizing cleanup activities as part of Earth Day (April 22). It has now become a spring tradition in Banff.
At the invitation of Japanese residents of the town, Consul-General Wajima and Mrs. Wajima participated in this year’s cleanup.
