2026/5/13
On May 13th, Consul-General Wajima hosted Mike Mortimer, former president of the Alpine Club of Canada, and his wife Heather Mortimer for dinner at the official residence. During this time, they exchanged views on the respective alpine clubs of Canada and Japan.
Over the course of many years, Mr. Mortimer has played a prominent role in fostering exchanges between the mountaineering clubs of Japan and Canada. Notably, in 2000, while serving as president of the Alpine Club of Canada, he spearheaded the joint commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Alberta. He was also actively involved in preparations for the 100th anniversary which took place in Jasper, Alberta July 2025.
As part of the cultural exchange during the dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer enjoyed matcha tea served with dessert and learned about this traditional aspect of Japanese culture.
The Consulate-General looks forward to continuing its close cooperation with the Alpine Club of Canada to further strengthen Japan-Canada relations and promote personnel exchanges.
