MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho/MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities. Only Canadian citizens living in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, The Northwest Territories, and Nunavut can apply for these programs through the Consulate-General of Japan at Calgary, Canada. The necessary forms can be accessed via the links below. For those that are nationals of a country other than Canada which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government you must apply via the appropriate Japanese embassy or consulate in your country of citizenship.

 

NOTE: Please be aware that interviews and tests for applicants within the jurisdiction of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, The Northwest Territories, and Nunavut will take place at the Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary.

Applications must be sent to the Japanese diplomatic mission which has jurisdiction over the location of your place of residence. Note as follows the Japanese diplomatic missions in Canada and their jurisdictions with respect to the MEXT application process :

Research Studies

Currently Open For Application: No
The application details for 2022 (closed) are as follows, and are for reference purposes only. Application for the MEXT 2023 Research Studies Scholarship will open in Spring 2022.

 

Duration: 24 months, beginning in April 2022 or 18 months, beginning in October 2022

Outline of Eligibility:
Degree: Bachelor's degree or higher
Age: born on or after April 2, 1987 (for the 2022 recruitment)
Study Area: the same field that the applicant has studied, or a related field
Citizenship: Canadian

Departure Date: April or October 2022

Placement at University: Designated by MEXT, based on your admission or a letter of provisional acceptance you obtain from Japanese universities.

Application Deadline: Wednesday, May 12th, 2021

Selection Process:

  1. Application documents review
  2. Examination (Japanese and English) and Interview : late June to early July
  3. 1st screening notification of results : mid July
  4. Obtain admissions or letters of provisional acceptance
  5. Acceptance notification : January 2022 or later

*The selection process may be abruptly cancelled at any time or applicants may be unable to travel to Japan even after being selected for the MEXT Scholarship Program due to measures taken in response to COVID-19.

Undergraduate Studies

Currently Open For Application: No
The application details for 2022 (closed) are as follows, and are for reference purposes only. Application for the MEXT 2023 Undergraduate Studies Scholarship will open in Spring 2022.

 

Duration: 5 years, beginning in April 2022
For those majoring in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or a six-year course in pharmacy, the term of the scholarship is 7 years.
(The first year is language training.)

Outline of Eligibility:
Education: High school diploma or higher
Age: born on or after April 2, 1997 (for the 2022 recruitment)
Citizenship: Canadian

Departure Date: April 2022

Placement at University: Designated by MEXT, based on your fields and subjects choices.

Application Deadline: Friday, June 4th, 2021

Selection Process:

  1. Application documents review
  2. Examination (Japanese, English, Mathematics and Science*) and Interview : August
    *Only for applicants who choose Natural Science field
  3. Notification of 1st screening results: late September
  4. Acceptance notification : January 2022

Japanese Studies

The application details for 2021 (closed) are as follows, and are for reference purposes only. Application for the MEXT 2022 Japanese Studies Scholarship will open Early 2022.


Duration: 1 year, beginning in October 2021.

Outline of Eligibility:
Education: must be an undergraduate student at a non-Japanese university majoring in fields related to the Japanese language or culture at the time of arriving in and leaving Japan

*Please note that you MUST be required to have proof of Japanese ability/level such as the JLPT Exam Certificate (Preferably N2 and up)

Age: born between April 2, 1991 and April 1, 2003
Citizenship: Canadian
Departure Date: October 2021
Placement at University: Designated by MEXT, taking into consideration your Japanese language ability, your placement preference, and application screening
Selection Process:
  1. Documents Review
  2. Interview : Held during the week of February 15th
  3. Acceptance notification : August 2021
